Mortensen dedicated “Falling” to his brothers, and though the characters in the motion picture are not explicitly playing his father or the rest of his family, they would recognize the feelings and ideas Mortensen embedded within it.
“My brothers, to whom it’s consecrated to, would recognize certain dynamics, a few phrases, a couple of events. But it’s % fiction, but they would realize the feelings behind it,” he told TheWrap’s Steve Pond at Sundance. “What stimulated me to pen the story has a lot to do with how I feel about my parents.”

Next month, he’s releasing his directorial debut movie, Falling, which follows an aging male lover man who decides to take protect of his homophobic father suffering from dementia. Mortensen didn’t just direct the film, but he also wrote and is starring in the lead role. He purposely made the titular nature a gay dude dealing with a homophobic parent for the drama and backstory of it all, which is going to create for a compelling story. However, he’s refusing to admit fault for playing gay.

The Lord of the Rings and Green Book star is making his debut as penner and director with the production, about a married gay dude who takes care of his conservative and homophobic father after he starts to exhibit symptoms of dementia.
Mortensen stars as guide character John, with Lance Henricksen as his father, Terry Chen as his husband, and Laura Linney as his sister.
But Mortensens decision to cast himself as a gay man has led to criticism, given ongoing backlash in Hollywood over straight, cisgender actors taking LGBTQ roles.
Speaking with Britains The Times, Mortensen clapped advocate at such criticism, noting that while its healthy to argue LGBTQ representation, his decision to play a gay man wasnt a gimmick.
