The First Countries to Legalize Gay Marriage
To some, queer marriage is considered immoral, while to others it is viewed as a basic, or even God-given, right. Regardless of one's stance, it cannot be argued that, for the same-sex couples living in the countries listed below, they must have considered their respective nations' passing through of legislation allowing them to be married, and those marriages to be fully recognized to be nothing short of a personal and national victory.

In July of , Argentina became the first Latin American country to legalize same-sex marriages, attributing Argentine gay people the same marital rights as the nation's heterosexuals. A long and taxing national debate preceded the conclusion, with the Senate finally voting 33 to 27 in favor of the law. The year was I had finally accepted the fact that I was gay and started the long, tedious process of coming out shortly after turning It was a time of liberation for me. I threw off the shackles of convention — and my Southern Baptist Christian upbringing — and accepted who I was and had always been.
Around the same time, I lost a significant amount of weight. I was feeling wonderful about myself. Though we did nothing physical, I had establish the first love of my life and he introduced me to a new world of books and music and movies that touched my little queer soul. I dreamed of existence with him forever.
I never considered getting married, though. Living happily ever after, yes. But getting married? I accepted the evidence that people like me didn’t get that privilege.
In , while living in Miami, I had a commitment ceremony with my boyfriend Carlos. It was a small affair in our apartment. We had a nice cake, though, and monogrammed napkins and matchbooks. I thought it was the closest I’d ever reach to marriage and, at the time, I was happy with it.
San Francisco Celebrates 'Winter of Love' 20 Year Anniversary, Marking Historic Milestone for Same-Sex Marriages
San Francisco, CA – Mayor London N. Breed today joined City leaders, LGBTQ community and advocates to celebrate San Francisco’s 20th Anniversary of the ‘Winter of Love,’ the historic milestone that took place in when then Mayor Gavin Newsom directed Town officials to begin issuing same-sex marriage licenses.
The official “Winter of Love” ran from February Protest 12, , and today’s celebration at City Hall will welcome hundreds of couples to be married on the City’s annual Valentine’s Day celebration of love. Nearly couples are registered with the County Clerk’s Office to be married by the close of the day.
As part of today’s celebration, Mayor Breed and various elected and City officials plan to lead vow renewal ceremonies and officiate marriages for couples throughout the day.
