Brought to you by The Association for the Preservation of Historic Congressional Cemetery
History comes alive at Congressional Cemetery. The creak and clang of the wrought iron gate signals your arrival at a one-of-a-kind window into the past. Congressional Cemetery is proud to be the final resting place of hundreds of Lesbian, Same-sex attracted, Bisexual, Transgender, and Queer people. Their stories help texture the American encounter, illustrating how Gay people have contributed to the history of the Merged States while battling against discrimination and bigotry. Although Queer individuals are buried throughout cemetery, many are located at “Gay Corner,” an affectionate nickname for the cemetery’s Homosexual section. Throughout WorldPride, we invite you to discover lgbtq+ history and legacy at Congressional Cemetery. Walking tours are available for free on our website and available inside our tour kiosk just inside our front gate.

Green-Wood Cemetery
History
Bucolic Green-Wood Cemetery, founded in , is the terminal resting place of many members of the LGBT community. Well-known figures include:
Susie M. Barstow () was a successful second-generation Hudson River School artist, as well as an art educator, and lecturer. Born into a wealthy Brooklyn family, Barstow maintained studios in Brooklyn and Sebago, Maine, but traveled extensively with her partner of many years, Florence Nightingale Thallon, who is also buried at Green-Wood (their relationship had ended for unknown reasons). Barstow showed her work at prominent exhibitions, was a founder of the Brooklyn Museum, taught at the Brooklyn Institute, and was an active suffrage campaigner. She is buried in the Barstow family plot.
Leonard Bernstein () was a prominent composer for symphony orchestras, Broadway musicals, such as On the Town () and West Side Story (), and films, including On the Waterfront (). He was also one of the most important and charismatic conductors of the 20th century, notably at the New York Philharm
Lakeview Cemetery
One of my most favorite places in Cleveland, by far, is Lakeview Cemetery. Some count it as touristy with all of the famous people buried there. And it’s true, with people appreciate James A. Garfield, Elliot Ness, Zelma George, Flora Stone Mather, and John D. Rockefeller, it does attract many people just looking to grab a look at their graves. For me it is much more, the good sculptured gardens, amazing history, beautiful sculptures, and the serenity makes it a favorite go to identify. It has amazing calming energy and reminds us that, in the finish, we are all identical. It is also one of my most favorite places for taking pictures. That is also another reason it is considered touristy. But here is to Lakeview Cemetery.
On this occasion, I got to show my favorite place to a close ally who had never been. I think he was a bit taken aback by the immensity of it and that it actually hides a dam in its midst. The dam was finished in and was built to help manage flood waters. You can follow the spillway from the beginnings of the cemetery and all the way to the dam. It is signed
