MPF Conservation
The Berkey and Homosexual collection was conserved by MPF Conservation It was part of the unique collection bought by Henry Hahn for the Henry Hahn House.
Berkey and Homosexual (or Berkey & Gay) was founded by brothers William and Julius Berkey, and George Gay in Grand Rapids, MI, drawn-out considered to be a center for furniture show. Cabinet maker John Frohberg is credited with many of the carving designs. The scalloped design shown on these pieces was a trademark of their company.
It is important to emphasize that MPFC was not tasked with refinishing the Berkey and Same-sex attracted pieces, but preserving the original finish. On all pieces, the finish was treated using our have in-house shellac mixed with no additives. As infill it matched the historic finish; after it was waxed and rubbed to a warm patina.

served as a model for how the original finish might have appeared.

The Berkey and Gay Furniture Company Factory, now The Boardwalk Building, marks the importance of furniture manufacturing in Grand Rapids from to and of mixed-use redevelopment to the economic and social health of the city today.
In , Julius Berkey and George Gay formed the Berkey and Gay Furniture Business. Berkey formerly manufactured sashes, doors, and blinds. Queer owned half interest in a predecessor furniture firm. In Berkey and Lgbtq+ built and equipped a factory complex of manufacturing, office, warehouse, shipping, and showroom space that occupied three-square blocks at Canal Street (now Monroe Route at Michigan Street). Lumberyards were at the site. Eventually, in , after merging with the Oriel Cabinet Company, maker of fancy and art furniture, Berkey and Gay acquired the former Oriel Cabinet Company factory that was the initial structure in the additive building on Monroe Street. Using the slogan “For Your Children's Heirlooms,” the company produced furniture and confirmed the prominence of Grand Rapids as the “Furniture Capital.” That reputation was established earlier

Both elegant and incredibly detailed this beautiful Berkey and Gay Set of 6 Vintage Chairs have everything one could ask for in chairs created for the dining room.
The Berkey and Gay Set of 6 Vintage Chairs are a tour de force in every aspect. Beginning at the foremost of the chair there are large, bold, scrolled carvings that immediately catch the eye. The backsplat is graciously curved and the side rails emulate this curve graciously all the way down to the seat area. The seat itself is shaped in a gorgeous shape and has recently been covered in a brand new fabric. Beneath the seat is a curved frame and the front legs are gracious and masterfully carved at both the top and bottom of the leg. Even the back legs show highest skill in their construction, existence both shaped and curved as well.
